Hello and welcome back to SONGS YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD!
As you may have noticed, the Glastonbury line up dropped today, so where better to look for todays song than there?
After some randomising, I have ended up with Pynk by Janelle Monáe (feat. Grimes)!
Here’s what I thought…
THE SONG:
Pynk.
Yes, this song is genuinely about vaginas. Pynk is an anthem for female sexuality, with reference after reference to vaginas and cunnilingus left right and centre, and through its open and positive discussions of this, it serves as a glorious celebration of women, and in my opinion, Monáe’s magnum opus.
Because it’s also an absolute tune.
With it’s airy vocals and rolling production, Pynk soothes you and welcomes you in, before coming in hard with the final chorus, and my word, does it go large.
Pynk is a phenomenal pop song, with a great video. Monáe dances about in some David Bowie-esque curved trousers, with the subtle difference in her attire being that the legs seem to be designed to look like labia. I wasn’t kidding when I said this song was about vaginas.
THE ARTIST:

Janelle Monáe has been releasing music since 2003, though rose to public prominence in 2011 when she featured on the single We Are Young by fun. Though her contribution was brief, the song achieved major commercial success, and propelled the name Janelle Monáe into the public conscience.
Since then, she has released 2 studio albums, 2013’s The Electric Lady, which debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, and 2018’s Dirty Computer, containing Pynk, and achieving widespread critical acclaim, with two Grammy nominations including Album of the Year. It’s also brilliant. Go and listen to it.
As well as this, Monáe has appeared in a number of films, including Moonlight, which won the Academy Award for Best picture. Basically, she makes some good shit.
RATING:
9/10
Pynk is a great tune, and one of the few songs I’ve ever heard to be literally about female reproductive organs. And honestly, I’m here for it.
