Hello and welcome back to songs you will have heard! The random number generator spat out 12 today, so I went and listened to the track that is number 12 in the Official Charts currently, Sweet but Psycho by Ava Max!

Here’s what I thought…

THE SONG:

As soon as the piercing scream opens the proceedings, you know you’re in for something. And that something is an absolute belter.

Sweet but Psycho is a caution to everyone: avoid this girl at all costs. Like a siren drawing ships onto the rocks, she may seem appealing but instead, she will ruin your life.

The sort of girl that you can’t stop returning to, despite everything, she is truly “poison but tasty”. And my word, is this a song that I can’t stop returning to.

No wonder it went to #1.

The real genius of this song is that it nails the one thing that truly makes a great pop song – a melody that you just can’t get out of your head. Sweet but Psycho is gloriously catchy, and supported by the 808-fueled production, it has a real drive that makes you want to stand up and scream it to the world, and tell them about the non-existent girl who keeps wronging you.

That chorus is something to behold, and I haven’t stopped singing it since I first heard the song in a dingy Winchester nightclub. I’m addicted. Help.

THE ARTIST:

Ava Max (known to her friends as Amanda Ava Koci) in a good mood

Having featured on Le Youth single Clap Your Hands in 2017, Max embarked on a solo career the next year, with a couple of singles put out, before Sweet but Psycho dropped on August 17.

This changed things.

Sweet but Psycho reached number 1 in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Holland, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, and the UK, as well as the US Dance Club Songs chart.

That’s pretty good going.

She is yet to release another single, though has a couple more high-profile guest appearances under her belt, and I would expect that we may hear a lot more of the name Ava Max in the not too distant future.

Other songs to check out: My Way, Not Your Barbie Girl, Clap Your Hands (Le Youth)

RATING:

8/10

This is a pop banger by every definition. Arguably the best pop song in the last year. With its catchy chorus and punchy lyrics, this song is going to be stuck in your head for the rest of the day, nay, the week - and you won’t mind at all.
