Welcome back to songs you will have heard! This week the random number generator generated number 19, which means I have listened to the current number 19 in the charts, Wow. by Post Malone!

Here’s what I thought…

THE SONG:

Wow. gives you everything we’ve come to expect from a Post Malone song – deep bass beats, vaguely boastful lyrics (does “Yeah, your grandmama probably know me” count as a boast?), topped off by Malones pretty much omnipresent voice at this point.

The problem with that is, it’s not interesting anymore.

When Post Malone first appeared on the scene it almost appeared like he was going to be the next truly interesting soulful hip-hop vocalist. His unique voice and mouth-wateringly bassy productions were new, exciting, and we couldn’t wait to see what he was going to do next.

Wow. is proof that what he did was exactly the same thing. Over and over and over.

This is a song with no soul. It’s the same old tired boasts with the same old tired beats, nothing new, no one moment that is an improvement on the background noise I would hear if I took my headphones off.

I’m genuinely struggling to think of things to say about this song. It’s just… dross. There are no redeeming qualities. Don’t waste 2 minutes and 35 seconds of your life on this.

If I was to choose one word to describe this song, it would not be wow.

THE ARTIST:

Post Malone (also known as Austin Post. He got his stage name from a rap name generator. That isn't a joke.)

You probably know who Post Malone is. One of the most famous musicians currently releasing, 2 platinum albums in America, with the latest, Beerbongs & Bentleys going number one pretty much everywhere, it’s been a good few years for him.

Known for his distinctive voice (and appearance), and his powerful, bass-driven hip-hop beats, he has rapidly rose to super-stardom since 2016, the year that both his debut EP and album were released.

Despite his success, he has never managed to escape controversy, particularly in the case of his alleged appropriation of African-American culture, as well as claiming that hip-hop – the genre within which he releases – lacks meaning, stating that “if you want to think about life, don’t listen to hip hop”.

That hasn’t, however, halted his success, and he continues to be one of the best selling artists out there.

RATING:

2/10

It only got more than one because I can’t deny he has a good voice.
