Fuck You - Death Angel

Hello and welcome back to songs you won’t have heard! This week I went back to forgotify and well… it was a wild ride.

Here’s what I listened to…

THE SONG:

The moment I saw the title Fuck You I figured that I was in for something aggressive, rough, maybe violent. I can handle that, I thought.

Oh, how naïve I was.

Fuck You is essentially 4 minutes of constant distortion with little to no variation, an outrageously fast beat, and a deranged voice yelling “fuck you”. This is not so much a song as a 4 minute and 46 second long noise, and frankly I felt absolutely terrified whilst listening to it.

Which may explain its placement on an album called Terrorcore.

I couldn't even comprehend what I had listened to, so I did some reading into Terrorcore, and found out that it is an offshoot of the genre Speedcore, described as angry, aggressive, violent, vulgar and offensive.

And this is just on its own Wikipedia page.

This sort of music rarely drops below 300 beats per minute, and sometimes exceeds 1000bpm. (Terrorcore can sometimes be a little slower at a pedestrian 250 bpm)

My only question is: Why? Who is this for? What do you have to be thinking to decide, yes, I really fancy listening to some obnoxious noise at lightspeed?

I fear I sound like an old man, bemoaning music he doesn’t understand because it isn’t Led Zeppelin, but I just… I’m baffled, and slightly scared.

THE ARTIST:

Death Angel, at Sauna Open Air 2010

Mercifully, not all their music is like this.

Death Angel are normally a thrash metal band, a fast and crunchy subgenre of heavy metal, and they combine some mind bogglingly fast guitar riffs with growling lyrics to produce a seriously adrenaline pumping sound.

I was pleasantly surprised with what I found in their back catalogue after that… thing I just listened to. I’m not a huge metal fan, but I can appreciate it when it’s done well, and Death Angel’s music is exactly that.

Packed with some serious punch, they like to play around with time signatures and complex arrangements, and even with all that weirdness going on, it is successful in pumping you up.

I genuinely found myself head-banging along to a couple of tracks, and would definitely recommend them if you are into this sort of music.

Well, most of their music anyway.

Other songs to check out: The Moth, The Ultra-Violence, Kill As One

RATING:

1/10

I think I may have accidentally stumbled across their very worst song.

I don’t have an issue with noisy music, or aggressive music, in fact I quite enjoy it, but this… I’m just not even sure what this is.

The most I can say is it is an all-out assault on your ears, the noise and aggression ramped up to 11.

It’s garbage.
